You Can’t Help It…

Creating anything, including our lifestyles, is fundamentally a process of choice making. And since daily life is fundamentally about making choices, in many ways we can look at our lives as largely a manifestation of our creativity. Regardless of whether or not we think we are creative, we’re all being creative. Everyday. We simply can’t help it…. if we wanted to, can’t help it, no. Please excuse the Michael Jackson song lyrics… I couldn’t help it. Sorry, I digress…

Anyway, while we may not be performing or visual artists, we’re all life artists. Every day, all day, we’re making choices.  Big ones, little ones, and more often than we realize in the moment, life changing ones. Anytime we decide to do this, do that, or the other – we’re creating. And though we may not think of it this way, the canvas we’re working on when we make these decisions, the medium of expression, is our lives.

In light of this, what if we begin to consider the truth of our creativity as something to be leveraged on our own behalf? Instead of the passive growth that happens to us due to life’s inevitable changes, the ups and downs that force us to adapt and survive, what if we go beyond that to also embrace the kind of growth that is more proactive and actually connected how we thrive? What if we lived in such a way as to invite conscious, active growth in the service of unfolding our potential? What if we organized our lives in support of discovering that sweet intersection of “the place where our deep gladness and the world’s deep hunger meet?” And what if in the process of discovering and living in that sweet intersection, we become living works of art that enrich the human experience for both ourselves and others? And what if we saw our creativity as not only something to be brought to bear in contributing to the enhancement of our external world, but also as a uniquely powerful tool to be leveraged in the service of expanding and elevating our internal world as well?

I’m not about to provide an answer for any of these what ifs because I think they’re as unique as we all are. But I will say that as of 2010, I’ve been allowing myself to live these questions.

And if you haven’t allowed yourself to do the same, I heartily encourage you to actively explore them …

Because for me, so far … it’s been a wild, surprising, amazing, crazy, despairing, thrilling, exhilarating, scary, mind-blowing, eye-opening, joyful, awe-inspiring ride …

And so far … I’m really diggin’ it …
